Compost Toilet in a Holiday Rental on the Isle of Skye

One of the most popular market segments for compost toilets is the ‘holiday cottage’ sector. It’s easy to understand why – often the buildings are in remote or environmentally sensitive areas and it may not be possible, desirable, or even affordable to put in a septic tank or sewerage system.

Understandably though, property owners are cautious about what guests are likely to feel about using a compost toilet, but on one property on the Isle of Skye ( 15fiscavaig.co.uk ) the owner, Nick, says “We have been very pleased with the Separett Villa 9000 compost toilet over the past few years and many of the guests have been won over after initial trepidation.”

15 Fiscavaig is a uniquely designed, contemporary low impact holiday house by Rural Design Architects. Set in a beautiful location on the Isle of Skye, it offers the perfect holiday rental for couples, small families or close friends. In 2010 the striking timber house became the first ever recipient of the Saltire Medal. It’s unique design has won widespread appeal and it’s been featured in the Guardian newspaper, Small House Bliss, and Channel 4’s ever-popular Grand Designs TV series, along with BBC2 programme, “The House that 100k built” with architect Piers Taylor.

As for the future, Nick is already building another, smaller holiday house nearby, in which he’ll be installing a Separett Weekend waterless compost toilet. He’s also just started using a HOTBIN to accelerate composting of the toilet contents, although the unique and sometimes extreme weather on Skye means it has to be very carefully placed so it doesn’t get caught by the wind!

Nick’s positive approach to contemporary design and ecological innovations, like the waterless compost toilet, mean that unlike many holiday properties on Skye, 15 Fiscavaig has virtually continuous occupation year round and with many visitors re-booking for the following year.
